Known issues when using VNC Server in User Mode with multiple monitors

1) Xinerama is an extension built into some Linux/Unix systems which enables multi-headed applications or window managers to use two or more physical displays as one large virtual display.

Essentially, if you're running a version of Linux/Unix that uses Xinerama and you have multiple monitors, you may encounter these issues:

  • It cannot inject pointer events (mouse clicks/movements) to screens other than screen 0.0 (the primary screen).
  • It cannot detect changes to screens other than screen 0.0 via XDAMAGE.

Using XRANDR as opposed to Xinerama will resolve the issues.

2) In addition to the above, when not using Xinerama or XRANDR, VNC Server in User Mode is unable to inject input events (i.e. typing on the keyboard, moving/clicking the mouse) on screens other than screen 0.0 (the primary screen).
