Setblocking. An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket (10038)

This article applies to the following product(s):

VNC

After upgrading to VNC v5.0, you may receive the following error:

Setblocking. An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket (10038)

This error occurs because a third-party application is interacting with the networking configuration.

Causes

  1. A firewall, anti-virus, or other security software is deliberately blocking network access. If you have upgraded from an older version of VNC, the executables and their names have changed, which may cause the upgraded software to be blocked.

You will need to check the exceptions list in your security software and ensure it contains the correct entries. See the upgrade guide for a list of relevant filename changes to look for.

  2. Other networking applications may interfere with Windows networking functionality. Workarounds for certain Layered Service Providers (LSPs) are contained in the VNC 5.0.2 patch release. Please upgrade if you are experiencing problems. See Apple support article TS4123 for a list of some common applications known to use LSPs. There is additional information on your system configuration available in the msinfo32 output. Contact support if errors persist after upgrading to 5.0.2.

  3. Some third-party networking software contains bugs which cannot be worked around, and prevent correct functioning of RealVNC and other vendors' software.

Resolution

The latest release of our VNC software resolves this issue in most cases. Download it from:
