I've installed VNC on my computer, but I can't see an icon in the notification area (system tray).

It sounds as though you may be using Microsoft RDP. RDP doesn't actually connect to the console session by default (the screen you'd see if you were sitting in front of the computer). It creates it's own virtual session, meaning that VNC is in fact running correctly in the background, but the system tray icon will be showing on the console session, not within your virtual user session.

You'll need to logon at the physical computer (not via RDP) to see the system tray icon, or you'll need to use a user-mode server inside your RDP session.

You can of course simply connect to your VNC Server. If you've just installed VNC, then it will be configured and ready to use. The default authentication method is 'Windows password', and the default user is the Administrator of the computer.
