Can I use the iPhone Viewer with the built-in OSX Screen Sharing feature?

You can use the RealVNC VNC Viewer for iPhone to control a Mac via the OSX Screen Sharing feature.

  1. Open the Mac's System Preferences screen
  2. Click on the "Sharing" control panel
  3. Select the "Screen Sharing" service from the list of services and check the box
  4. Click "Computer Settings..."
  5. Check the "VNC Viewers may control screen" box and set a VNC password, then click ok.
N.B. If you are using OSX Server, the name of the service (step 3) is "Remote Management" but otherwise the steps are the same.

If you are connecting from an iPhone connected over wifi on the same LAN as the Mac, this is all you need to do.  Type the IP of the Mac into the iPhone Viewer and connect using the password set in step 5.

If you are connecting over 3G data or the internet, you will need to configure your network for internet access.  See the related articles.
